A History of Proving Results Leads Into the Future of Patient Safety

MOREOB
At its origins, the MOREOB Program was
developed to create a model of care where patient safety is the priority and everyone’s responsibility. In essence MOREOB is about improving performance in patient safety.
In designing MOREOB we saw the need for a continuous patient safety training program that could be delivered to thousands of healthcare professionals from different disciplines involved in obstetrical hospital care on an ongoing basis. To achieve a culture of safety we recognize the need to emphasize that safety is everyone’s responsibility. Furthermore it was important for all participants to understand the importance of having shared goals and values. The principles of High Reliability Organizations had proven pivotal to improving and sustaining a safety culture in other work environments. We felt this should be a cornerstone of the MOREOB Program. To this the MOREOB team has added performance assessment enhancement tools and integrated these as the norm into the practice environment.
The MOREOB Program has expanded from the 33 pilots in May 2004 to its current level of nearly 200 participating hospitals in Canada with approximately 7,000 participants. The program expanded into the United States in the fall of 2005 and currently involves two participating hospitals.

AMPROOB
Significant expansion has now been announced in the Province of Quebec (click here for more) where 62 hospitals will join AMPROOB, the French-language version of Salus' cornerstone program, over the next three years.
This addition expands the MOREOB program to a multilingual platform and reconfirms the acknowledgement of Salus' ongoing contribution to Patient Safety in Obstetrics.

Interim results demonstrate
the ability of the program to:
- Engage large numbers of participants in a multidisciplinary process to improve patient safety
- Shift existing cultures to a more focused patient safety culture as measured by the program’s Culture Change Assessment Tool (CCAT)
with all elements showing
improvement
- Improve the obstetrical core knowledge of participants in all disciplines and in all environments
- Reduce incurred costs of labour and delivery claims in participating hospitals as reported by claims data provided by the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada
- Facilitate Accreditation
Canada accreditation process
- Facilitate a process for measuring the impact on the work environment (the social infrastructure).
The huge success of the program to date has generated significant interest from several stakeholders (hospitals, liability providers, specialty societies) in Salus applying the principles and tools of the program to other clinical programs in the acute care setting. As a result, Salus has recently announced a new program to be released during the
fall of 2008 to address the patient safety performance needs and goals of hospital programs outside of obstetrics.
9 + one will lead Salus' expansion into non-OB environments while extending the core values and learnings of the
MOREOB program.
