Created in 1944, The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is one of North America’s oldest organizations devoted to the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology. The Society is a non-profit professional organization with its national office in Ottawa, Canada. Its membership includes over 3,000 obstetricians and gynaecologists as well as general practitioners, researchers, nurses, midwives and other health care providers involved in women’s healthcare.
The Society embraces values and beliefs that lead to improved patient care including the facilitation of change in the healthcare system at the provincial and national level. Now in its 64th year,
it's main activities include physician education, public education, lobbying, advocacy on behalf of
women and their families. With its extensive educational programs and published clinical guidelines, the SOGC has provided the reference for standards of obstetrical care
for healthcare providers and the public. The SOGC has been exemplary in the development of risk management programs and played a leadership role in the provision of a national obstetrical patient safety program. In addition the SOGC also recognizes the importance of pursuing excellence in international women’s health, and works in collaboration with international stakeholders toward the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide.
