When the Bottom Line Is Human Life: Evaluating a National Health Care Program SU219
Sunday, 06/01/2008 1:45PM - 3:00PM , Room 1 AB
Description: The bottom line for MOREOB, a patient safety program for hospital obstetrics units, is saving babies and moms—reducing harm events and near-misses. The three-year program, now implemented in more than 135 hospitals across Canada and the United States, uses principles of high-reliability organizations to meet such goals as improved clinical knowledge and skills for doctors, nurses, and midwives; improved teamwork, communication, clinical practice, and culture change in obstetrics units; and improved clinical outcomes, enhanced patient and caregiver satisfaction, a healthier workplace, and reduction in insurance liability claims. Now, more than four years after its implementation, evaluation results suggest that the program is working at all levels. Key to the program’s impact is changing the workplace culture of obstetrics units—the way in which doctors and nurses value, respect, and interact with one another, whether in day-to-day work or in the grip of a medical emergency. The speakers will explain their two-phase evaluation model for MOREOB and how its results are being leveraged to: enhance program design and delivery; support marketing and program adoption; and provide ongoing feedback to front-line hospital staff, administrators, and program sponsors and insurers. In an interactive case presentation, they will describe the evaluation framework used to assess the program’s impact—and more critically, the strategies for leveraging evaluation results.
